As you prepare for your visa application, here are key points to keep in mind. These tips are based on guidance from NAFSA: Association of International Educators, a leading resource for international student support across the U.S.
SEVIS Fee (Form I-901)
All international students applying for an F-1 visa must pay the $350 SEVIS I-901 fee before their visa interview.
Be sure to:
- Pay the fee at least three business days before your visa appointment.
- Bring your payment receipt to the visa interview.
- Keep a copy of the receipt for your records and carry it with you when entering the U.S.
Canadian citizens:
You do not need to apply for a visa, but you must pay the SEVIS fee and present your receipt at the border when entering the U.S.
Visa Denials
- If your visa is denied, the U.S. Embassy or Consulate will provide a written explanation for the decision.
- Keep this documentation and contact ISSS (International Services for Students and Scholars) at isssoffice@rpi.edu for support and guidance on next steps.
- You can also review visa denial information on the U.S. Department of State website.
Administrative Processing
- In some cases, visa applications require additional administrative processing.
- If this applies to your case, the consular officer will inform you during your interview.
- Processing times can vary, so we recommend applying as early as possible in case of delays.
