Adjusting to U.S. Academic Culture

The academic culture in America may be different from what you expect. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Expect that you will have period of time adjusting to something new or different.
  • Participate in your class. You can do this by sharing your opinion during a discussion, being an active participant in group work and more. Ask questions if you do not understand.
  • Prepare for your next class - make sure you have read the assigned reading or performed the required laboratory work so that you are ready for discussion.
  • Be prepared for some informality. Every professor is different, and some may ask you to call them by their first name and others may prefer their formal title. It is not a sign of disrespect if you are asked to call your professor by their first name.
  • Use the office hours for the professor or teaching assistant. If you are concerned that you need help or do not feel like you understand something, ask. You don't know if you don't ask.
